At Lollygagss Studio near Teuku Umar, BIAB has become one of our most requested nail services — and not just because it looks beautiful. It genuinely performs better in Bali's climate than almost anything else we offer.

What does BIAB stand for?

BIAB stands for Builder In A Bottle. It is a thick, strengthening builder gel that is applied directly over your natural nails — not as an extension, but as a protective and supportive layer that encourages healthy growth.

Unlike a standard gel manicure, which adds colour and a bit of shine with very little structural benefit, BIAB adds real strength to the nail plate. It helps prevent the bending, tearing, and peeling that most people experience here in Bali, where the combination of heat, humidity, salt water, and sunscreen can be genuinely harsh on nails.

Why is BIAB so popular in Bali specifically?

There is a particular kind of nail damage that happens when you live in Bali — or spend a long enough holiday here. The heat draws moisture from the nail bed. Pool chlorine strips the nail's natural oils. Salt water from Kuta or Seminyak beach softens the nail plate over time. And if you are applying SPF every day — which you should be — that sunscreen contact is slowly working against your gel adhesion.

Standard gel polish is not really designed to cope with all of that simultaneously. BIAB is. How long does BIAB last in Bali?

Most BIAB clients at our studio come back every three to four weeks for a Builder Infill, which keeps the structure balanced as the nail grows and avoids the lifting you sometimes see with gel manicures left too long.

That said, lifestyle matters. If you are spending every morning at the beach in Kuta or Legian, afternoons in the pool, and evenings with SPF still on your hands, your retention will be shorter than someone in an office in Denpasar. The nails are not failing — they are just working harder.

What to expect from your first BIAB appointment

A BIAB Manicure at Lollygagss takes around 60 minutes. Lina does all the work herself — there is no rotation between technicians, no one passing you off to a junior staff member halfway through. You get the same person from prep to finish.

The process involves shaping and prepping the natural nail, applying a bonding base, then building the BIAB layer and curing it under UV. From there you choose your colour, or keep it clear for a clean strengthening overlay. It finishes with cuticle care and a nail vitamin.

First-timers sometimes worry that BIAB will look thick or unnatural. In practice, it sits close to the nail and looks far more natural than acrylic or most hard gels. Most clients leave feeling like their hands look better than they have in years.

How to make your BIAB last longer in Bali

• Apply cuticle oil once or twice a day — particularly important in Bali's dry air conditioning.
• Avoid prolonged soaking in the first 24 hours after your appointment.
• Use gloves for cleaning or any heavy product exposure where you can.
• Rinse your hands after swimming in the ocean or pool, rather than letting salt or chlorine sit on the nail edge.
• Book your Builder Infill at three weeks rather than waiting until there is obvious lifting.
