The most common question at Lollygagss Studio is not "what colour should I pick" — it is "what should I actually get?" Most clients coming in from Seminyak, Kuta, Kerobokan, and Legian have a rough idea of the three main options, but they are not sure which one is right for their nails, their lifestyle, or how long they are planning to stay in Bali.
So here is the honest version. No filler, no pressure to upgrade. Just the differences that actually matter.
The three services, quickly
A gel manicure is a polish-gel hybrid applied directly over your natural nail, cured under UV. It gives colour and a little surface protection. The finish is thinner and more natural-feeling than anything structural — it sits on the nail rather than building it.
BIAB (Builder In A Bottle) is a structural builder gel. It adds actual thickness and strength to the natural nail, helping it grow and resist the kind of breakage that Bali's lifestyle — the sea, the pool, the sun — tends to cause. We have written about what BIAB actually does to the nail in detail if you want to go deeper on the science.
Gel tip extensions go further than either of the above. They add length using a gel tip that is bonded to the natural nail, then shaped, built, and finished to look natural. The result is longer nails that are custom-made to your nail shape — but are not relying on your natural nail to provide the length.
How they compare side by side
Gel Manicure
A thin colour layer over natural nails. No added thickness, no structural change. The go-to for a clean, polished finish without commitment.
- Quickest appointment
- Most natural feel on the nail
- Easiest to remove at home
- Good for short stays in Bali
BIAB
Builder gel that strengthens the natural nail while still looking completely natural. The best option for growth, durability, and Bali's climate.
- Lasts 3–4 weeks with infill
- Strengthens weak or damaged nails
- Works in Bali's humidity
- Looks fully natural
Gel Extensions
Gel tips bonded to the natural nail to add length. Best for clients who want longer nails than they can grow, with a natural-looking finish.
- Adds real length immediately
- Fully customisable shape
- Can be refilled as nail grows
- Durable with proper aftercare
Which one should you book?
The honest answer depends on four things: how long you are in Bali, what your natural nails are like right now, what you want them to look like, and how much maintenance you are willing to do.
If you are here for a week or two and want beautiful nails that you will not have to worry about removing properly before you fly home — gel manicure is the right call. It looks great, it is the easiest to deal with, and you will not be sitting in a chair for 90 minutes.
If you are staying longer — a month, or you live here — BIAB is almost always worth it. The durability difference in Bali's humidity is significant. Gel manicures that would last two weeks in Melbourne or London tend to lift in seven to ten days here. BIAB simply holds better, especially if you are in the water regularly. And the strengthening effect is real — most clients notice their natural nails are longer and healthier after a few months of consistent BIAB.
If you want longer nails and your natural nails are not going to get you there in a hurry, gel extensions are the answer. They are not as high-maintenance as people assume, but they do need care — you cannot treat extension nails like natural nails. Lina goes through all of that with you at the appointment.

What about damaged or very short nails?
If your nails are peeling, splitting, or have taken a battering recently, gel manicure is not the right starting point — it will not help, and you risk making the situation worse by applying product over compromised nail. BIAB is better in this situation because the builder gel actually adds support rather than just sitting on top.
Extensions need a reasonable amount of natural nail to bond to properly. Very short or damaged nails are not always a good starting point for extensions — Lina will tell you honestly if yours are not ready, and the usual recommendation is a month or two of BIAB first to build the nail up before going into extensions.

A note on aftercare in Bali
Whichever service you book, aftercare makes a bigger difference in Bali than almost anywhere else. The combination of salt water, chlorine, heat, and humidity is genuinely hard on nail product. Here is what applies to all three services:
- Use cuticle oil daily — particularly in Bali's air conditioning, which dries the nail edge faster than most people expect.
- Rinse hands after swimming in the ocean or pool rather than letting salt or chlorine sit on the nail edge.
- Give the product 24 hours before prolonged soaking after your appointment.
- Use gloves for cleaning, peeling vegetables, or anything involving strong products.
- Book your maintenance appointment at three weeks — do not wait until there is obvious lifting or damage.
Where to book in Kerobokan

Lina does every appointment herself. There is no junior staff, no passing-off, no variation in quality depending on who you get. You book with her, you get her.
